Hi there! I’m Soon Hau and I’m a UX researcher at Grab.

Before that, I was a Ph.D. candidate in the NUS-HCI Lab from the National University of Singapore. My research area is in Human-Computer Interaction, specifically on accessibility solutions, wearables, and online learning. My advisor is Shengdong Zhao.

I worked on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) research. I investigated how students learn from and with each other on the platform, and how that interaction can be improved from the interface and pedagogical standpoint. I conducted qualitative interviews and surveys with more than 200 MOOC students to understand their behaviors and motivations, and translated those insights into design requirements for improving the user interfaces and course structure/curriculum. Recently, I designed and evaluated a novel discussion interface that addresses some of the issues in MOOCs.

Apart from MOOC research, I also explored the use of novel technologies and modalities in developing usable solutions for colorblind people. Together with my collaborators, we developed colour-blind techniques that utilize the binocular luster effect with stereoscopic 3D, as well as haptic feedback on the wristband form factor. The former allows colorblind people to distinguish colors quickly, while the latter allows them to recognize and compare colors as well in daily life. I have also done work on human factors of wearable devices, specifically on investigating the impact of display positions on mobile task performances with Google Glass.

During my PhD, I had published in multiple top conferences (CHI, CSCW, Learning at Scale, Chinese CHI) and journals (ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction). I was also a committee of CHI 2015, HAI 2016, and referees for CHI (2014, 2015, 2016), MobileHCI (2015,2016), UIST 2016, Ubicomp 2016, and SIGGRAPH (2015,2016).

In my free time, I like to read (my digital bookshelf),  write, and design. I write on Medium about design, user experience & behavior, and the social impact of technology. I’m also an eclectic music listener, and I love watching football (the round one, not the oval one, mind you) and reading about advertising, branding, culture, and arts. You can find my writing on these topics in my Tumblr.
